Chop, Half, Volley, and Court Position

Chop stroke.

In Tennis, a chop stroke is a shot where the angle towards the player and behind the racquet, made by the line of flight of the ball, and the racquet travelling down across it, is greater than 45 degrees and may be 90 degrees. The racquet face passes slightly outside the ball and down the side, chopping it, as a man chops wood. The spin and curve is from right to left. It is made with a stiff wrist.

The slice shot merely reduced the angle mentioned from 45 degrees down to a very small one. The racquet face passes either inside or outside the ball, according to direction desired, while the stroke is mainly a wrist twist or slap. This slap imparts a decided skidding break to the ball, while a chop "drags" the ball off the ground without break.

The rules of footwork for both these shots should be the same as the drive, but because both are made with a short swing and more wrist play, without the need of weight, the rules of footwork may be more safely discarded and body position not so carefully considered.

Both these shots are essentially defensive, and are labour-saving devices when your opponent is on the baseline. A chop or slice is very hard to drive, and will break up any driving game.

It is not a shot to use against a volley, as it is too slow to pass and too high to cause any worry. It should be used to drop short, soft shots at the feet of the net man as he comes in. Do not strive to pass a net man with a chop or slice, except through a big opening.

The drop-shot is a very soft, sharply-angled chop stroke, played wholly with the wrist. It should drop within 3 to 5 feet of the net to be of any use. The racquet face passes around the outside of the ball and under it with a distinct "wrist turn." Do not swing the racquet from the shoulder in making a drop shot. The drop shot has no relation to a stop-volley. The drop shot is all wrist. The stop-volley has no wrist at all.

Use all your wrist shots, chop, slice, and drop, merely as an auxilliary to your orthodox game. They are intended to upset your opponent's game through the varied spin on the ball.

The half volley.

This shot requires more perfect timing, eyesight, and racquet work than any other, since its margin of safety is smallest and its manifold chances of mishaps numberless.

It is a pick-up. The ball meets the ground and racquet face at nearly the same moment, the ball bouncing off the ground, on the strings. This shot is a stiff-wrist, short swing, like a volley with no follow through. The racquet face travels along the ground with a slight tilt over the ball and towards the net, thus holding the ball low; the shot, like all others in tennis, should travel across the racquet face, along the short strings. The racquet face should always be slightly outside the ball.

The half volley is essentially a defensive stroke, since it should only be made as a last resort, when caught out of position by your opponent's shot. It is a desperate attempt to extricate yourself from a dangerous position without retreating. never deliberately half volley.

Court position.

A tennis court is 39 feet long from baseline to net. There are only two places in a tennis court that a tennis player should be to await the ball.
  1. About 3 feet behind the baseline near the middle of the court, or
  2. About 6 to 8 feet back from the net and almost opposite the ball.
The first is the place for all baseline players. The second is the net position.

If you are drawn out of these positions by a shot which you must return, do not remain at the point where you struck the ball, but attain one of the two positions mentioned as rapidly as possible.

The distance from the baseline to about 10, feet from the net may be considered as "no-man's-land" or "the blank." Never linger there, since a deep shot will catch you at your feet. After making your shot from the blank, as you must often do, retreat behind the baseline to await the return, so you may again come forward to meet the ball. If you are drawn in short and cannot retreat safely, continue all the way to the net position.

Never stand and watch your shot, for to do so simply means you are out of position for your next stroke. Strive to attain a position so that you always arrive at the spot the ball is going to before it actually arrives. Do your hard running while the ball is in the air, so you will not be hurried in your stroke after it bounces.

It is in learning to do this that natural anticipation plays a big role. Some players instinctively know where the next return is going and take position accordingly, while others will never sense it. It is to the latter class that I urge court position, and recommend always coming in from behind the baseline to meet the ball, since it is much easier to run forward than back.

Should you be caught at the net, with a short shot to your opponent, do not stand still and let him pass you at will, as he can easily do. Pick out the side where you think he will hit, and jump to, it suddenly as he swings. If you guess right, you win the point. If you are wrong, you are no worse off, since he would have beaten you anyway with his shot.

Your position should always strive to be such that you can cover the greatest possible area of court without sacrificing safety, since the straight shot is the surest, most dangerous, and must be covered. It is merely a question of how much more court than that immediately in front of the ball may be guarded.

A well-grounded knowledge of court position saves many points, to say nothing of much breath expended in long runs after hopeless shots.

Search Engine Optimization and Advertising

Search Engine Optimization and Advertising
Search Engine Optimization and Advertising - In today’s net-savvy world it has become common for any business to have a website which they use mostly for advertising their products and services. With the advent of search engines it has become even easier for the customers to search for the stuff online. For a website to be successful its link should land in the first three pages which the search engine brings and the rank of the page should be high which means many visitors come to the site. This can be achieved by applying search engine optimization or popularly known as SEO. This is a marketing strategy which increases the quality and quantity of traffic flow to a particular website via search engines.

SEO not only affects the search engine results, but also image search, video search and industry specific vertical search engines. It determines how a search algorithm functions and searches what is popular with people. When a website link is submitted to a search engine, a spider crawls through a page to gather links which lead to other pages and stores those pages on the server of the search engine. The information collected from these pages is sent to the indexer, whose job is to extract information from those pages such as the keywords and their weights, the location of the page and other links that are stored for the spider to crawl in future.

Search Engine Optimization and Advertising

In the beginning, the search engine optimizer algorithms were dependant on the keywords, Meta tags, and index files provided by the Webmaster. Meta tags provided information about a particular page, but using them for indexing the pages didn’t prove to be successful as some Webmasters added irrelevant Meta tags to increase the number of hits and earn huge ad revenue. They even changed the HTML of the web pages to achieve a good rank for the page. But this was a case of abuse as it fetched irrelevant pages.

Search engines then began utilizing complex ranking algorithm, which were difficult for the webmasters to manipulate so as to provide web surfers with genuine results. The rank of the web page was calculated mathematically by functions using strength and quantity of the inbound links. The higher the rank of the page the more chances it had to be viewed by a person. Later algorithms were developed which considered various other on-page factors such as rank and off-page factors such as hyperlink. Since the webmasters couldn’t manipulate the page rank, they began exchanging, selling and buying links, which lead to link spamming and even creation of numerous sites dedicated for this purpose.
Algorithms became more complex by every passing day and top search engines kept their algorithms a secret. As the cost of SEO increased, advertisers were roped in to pay for it, which finally resulted in high quality web pages. Although investing in SEO is very fruitful, but at the same time is risky because with out any prior notice the algorithms being used are bound to change and the search engine will stop directing visitors to the page. Many consultants are available in the market that provides SEO services. They manipulate the HTML source code of the web site like menus, shopping carts and sometimes even the content of the website to draw more traffic. Search engines like Yahoo has algorithms that extract pages not according to the page rank but according to the cost per click or set fee, that is if a advertiser desires that the page containing his ad be displayed, he is expected to pay money for it. This is a point of controversy, as only the big businesses will be able to increase the number of hits of their page but not the small business who might be having a better quality page.
Google Ad Words explores ads which have words typed in the search box by the surfer. The Million Dollar Homepage started the concept of Pixel advertising, which is a graphical kind of advertising. Depending on the pixels, the space is sold to the advertiser. Keyword advertising involves advertisers who buy URLs of a site and place their ads at that location. Thus SEO is a market in its own which is yielding great results for businesses on Internet.

Writing a good headline for your advertisement

Writing a good headline for your advertisement
Writing a good headline for your advertisement - There is no denying the fact that the success of an advertisement lies mostly in the headline. The headline should attract the reader and make him read the rest of the advertisement. The headline should be simply catchy and various key points should be embedded when deciding on the headline for the ad.

The headline should catch attention of the eye at the first glance. Words in headlines should act as tags for the advertisement. It should say it all about the content that follows. If a company is selling reasonably priced furniture, the headline of their advertisement should be ‘Durable furniture for less price’. This headline will attract the right customers who are on a look out for durable furniture as well as low cost furniture. If the customers to be reached belong to a category that are interested in decorating their house with beautiful furniture and aren’t concerned about the price to get the right look, then the headline can be ‘Change how your house looks by our oriental furniture’. Anything other than the prospects should not be included in the headline. If both men and women can use a product, both of them should be referred to in the title, missing out even one of the category is like losing a huge number of potential customers.

The title should be instant product seller. According to a research, five times more readers read just the headline when compared to those who read the complete advertisement. So the investment is of no use, if the title isn’t good enough to sell the product. There can be a possibility that the content of the ad isn’t strong enough. All the harm can be undone by having a powerful headline.

Writing a good headline for your advertisement

The headline should be centered on the product and not the company that is selling the product. The customer’s interest should be reflected and he should feel that he is directly addressed. Start with ‘you’ and not ‘we’. So if the client specified on mentioning the company’s name, don’t start the sentence with it. For example, instead of writing ‘Tylenol – solution for sever cold ’, write ‘Got sever cold? Try Tylenol’. Never forget to mention the name of the product in the headline. The product name should be of top priority.

A snapshot of the benefits of the product should be given in the headline. This is an important quality of a well-phrased headline. The customers look out for advantages when he thinks of buying a product. Keywords like whiter teeth, nutritious cereals, or miraculous growth should be incorporated in the title.

If inculcating all these factors have made the headline long, it should be remembered to write the product advantages in bold. If a visual is placed in the advertisement, it will be a good complement. As a picture speak thousand words. But care should be taken that the headline should say some part of the story and the visual should say the rest. Don’t repeat the headline or the picture.

Too much of cleverness should not be applied to design a headline. There are nearly five hundred advertisements in a local newspaper on weekends. A regular reader reads the headings of all of them. He will be able to classify between a false heading and a genuine heading. No false promises or information should be included in the headline. Over smart headlines are good for award competitions, but don’t really work with the savvy customers.

The headline should give out a positive feeling to the reader. Negativity should be totally excluded as it not only creates a negative impression but the mind will also be not receptive friendly. It sometimes confuses the mind and it interprets a negative meaning of the message being delivered. Confidence should be reflected in the headline. Don’t include any doubtful words like if and but. Conditional phrases are a strict no. The sentence should be in present tense, instead of past or future.

Iran appears to be standing down: Donald Trump to impose sanctions after missile strikes
The president confirmed no US soldiers were harmed in the overnight attacks, but in an apparent show of determination, he insisted America would impose economic sanctions on Iran that would remain in place "until Iran changes its behaviour".

In his address, from the grand foyer of the White House, and flanked by his top defence and security officials, Mr Trump told Americans they should be "extremely grateful and happy" that no US citizen was harmed in the attacks.

"Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good think for all parties concerned and a very good thing for the world," he said. Shortly after the speech, one of Iraq's leading clerics, Moqtadr al Sadr said the crisis was over and he called on militias in the country to be patient and not re-start military action - but the Iraqi military has since said that two rockets have fallen on the Green Zone in Baghdad. No casualties have been reported.

Mr Trump defended his decision to target Iran's Major General Qassem Soleimani who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad, Iraq, last Friday.

The president called him a "ruthless terrorist", saying the general's hands were "drenched in both American and Iranian blood" and he had been planning new attacks. "But we stopped him," he added. Not backing down from his preparedness to attack, Mr Trump said the US military had been "completely rebuilt" under his administration, saying: "Our missiles are big, powerful, accurate, lethal and fast... the fact that we have this great military equipment, however, does not mean we have to use it. We do not want to use it."

"Peace and stability cannot prevail in the Middle East as long as Iran continues to foment violence, unrest, hatred and war," he said. "Your campaign of terror, murder, mayhem, will not be tolerated any longer."

But he moved to strike a more positive tone, saying the US and Iran should work together on shared priorities, adding: "To the people and leaders of Iran: We want you to have a future and a great future - one that you deserve. One of prosperity at home and harmony with the nations of the world.

"The US is ready to embrace peace and all who seek it."He made his conditions clear, though: Iran must give up its nuclear ambitions and he demanded that the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany follow his lead and ditch the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA).

This came just hours after Boris Johnson told MPs that resurrecting the deal is the best way forward for solving the crisis in the Middle East.

In what some will say is posturing by Mr Trump ahead of an election campaign, he opened his speech by telling reporters: "As long as I am president of the US, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon."

Mr Trump has made no secret of his hatred of the Iran nuclear deal, and pulled the US out of it in March 2018.

He said: "For far too long - all the way back to 1979 to be exact - nations have tolerated Iran's destructive and destabilising behaviour in the Middle East and beyond. Those days are over."

Addressing the other signatories on Wednesday, he said: "The very defective JCPOA expires shortly anyway and gives Iran a clear and quick path to nuclear breakout.

"Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support for terrorism.

"The time has come for the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia and China to recognise this reality.

"They must now break away from the remnants of the Iran deal - or JCPOA - and we must all work together towards making a deal with Iran that makes the world a safer and more peaceful place."

The debate over unmasking the whistleblower

Source: us.yahoo.com
As part of a flurry of heated tweets last weekend, President Donald Trump shared a post that included the name of a man alleged to be the whistleblower whose complaint launched the impeachment process. Trump later deleted the tweet.

The anonymous whistleblower’s complaint, filed in August, first brought to light allegations that the president was using the military aid as a negotiating ploy to compel Ukraine to say it was investigating the business of Joe Biden’s son, hurting the leading Democratic candidate’s chances in the 2020 race. That complaint led to the launch of an impeachment inquiry, which ultimately led to Trump’s impeachment in the House of Representatives.

The purported identity of the whistleblower, which Yahoo New is not publishing, has been shared around far-right media for weeks and was recently published by some mainstream conservative publications. Trump has repeatedly called for the whistleblower to be identified, as have Republican members of Congress. At least two GOP representatives have publically used the name of the person believed to be the whistleblower.

As the Associated Press noted U.S. whistleblower laws “exist to protect the identity and careers of people who bring forward accusations of wrongdoing by government officials.” But there’s ambiguity about whether an official like Trump outing the person would violate those laws.

Why there’s debate

Calls for the whistleblower to be identified have mostly come from the president’s supporters. Trump and his allies have argued that the whistleblower’s identity must be made public to answer questions about their motivation for filing the complaint against Trump. Some journalists have argued that the press should out the whistleblower because the public deserves to have as much relevant information as possible to judge the merits of the impeachment process.

Others say the whistleblower must remain anonymous. Outing the person could endanger them and would make other whistleblowers less likely to call out corruption in the future, some argue. Trump’s critics further say he is looking to create a media circus to distract from the substance of the accusations against him.

Some make the case that the whistleblower’s identity is irrelevant, since the allegations in the complaint have been corroborated and expanded upon by witness testimony in the impeachment inquiry and an edited transcript of Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president in July.

What’s next

The whistleblower’s legal team has reportedly begun preparing for the possibility that their client may be compelled to testify in the Senate impeachment trial, though Democrat and GOP lawmakers are currently jockeying over whether the proceedings will feature any witnesses at all. The Senate trail could start as soon as this month if an agreement on rules is reached.
Perspectives

Do not disclose
Trump is eager to sic the conservative propaganda machine on the whistleblower

“Once the person’s identity is revealed, then they can find something to discredit them with and crank up the character assassination machine, which will then allow them to say that the whole thing was fruit of a poisonous tree and Trump must be found innocent.” — Paul Waldman, Washington Post
Identifying them would distract from the substance of Trump’s actions

“Disclosure can shift the story to the whistleblower’s irrelevant credibility, with the added bonus of deterring future whistleblowing. Of course, that is exactly why those whose bad acts are exposed by whistleblowers try to force the disclosure.” — Eric Havian and Michael Ronickher, USA Today
The whistleblower’s identity doesn’t matter

“The case against the president will rise or fall on the strength of the testimony being gathered from people with direct knowledge of what Trump said and did, regardless of the motives of the whistleblower who started the ball rolling.” — Editorial, Los Angeles Times
The whistleblower's life could be put at risk if identified

“While the presumed whistle-blower reportedly remains employed by the government, he is also reportedly subject to regular death threats, including at least implicit threat by Trump himself.” — David Frum, Atlantic
The fight against corruption requires protection for whistleblowers

“There are laws that protect whistleblowers. They are allowed to retain their anonymity and they are allowed to be free from retaliation. That is kind of a principle of solid government, good government, which is if somebody sees wrongdoing taking place within the government, there should be a mechanism there to report this without having to fear retribution.” — Rick Newman, Yahoo Finance

Identify them
Democrats’ motivations for protecting the whistleblower are purely political

“If the whistleblower testifies under oath, inconvenient truths will erupt. So, Democrats reckon, they are better off sticking a sock in his mouth.” — Deroy Murdock, Fox News
The press should name the whistleblower

“By leaving the whistleblower’s mask intact, establishment outlets believe they’ve navigated their way to the right side of the ethical line. But the whistleblower’s identity has become a political issue, and all this press coyness...puts the country’s top publications at risk of losing the trust of their readers. This approach enforces the prejudice that the establishment press is run by a bunch of high-handed, hypocritical elites.” — Jack Shafer, Politico
The public deserves to know who the whistleblower is

“The public has a right to know. There is no higher public concern than a debate that could lead to the president's removal. Simply put, everything should be public, because the public should be aware of everything that figures into the process.” — Editorial, Washington Examiner
Too many questions need answered for the whistleblower to stay anonymous

“What, if anything, did he leak? Did he work with Biden on Ukraine...Did he know about Burisma and Hunter Biden? Who told him about the call, and why did that person not complain instead of him? How did Schiff’s staff help him tailor the complaint? ...Shouldn’t we know the answers to these questions now, and not in two or three years when the inevitable official reports and tell-all books come out?” — Editorial, New York Post

Donald Trump Won't Reveal His New Year's Resolution For The Weirdest Reason

President Donald Trump seems to have mixed up New Year’s resolutions with birthday wishes, telling reporters that you’re not supposed to say them out loud.

Speaking at a party at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, first lady Melania Trump said her resolution is for “peace in the world.”

The president wouldn’t give his, saying, “I’m not sure you’re supposed to say a resolution out loud.” “I don’t want to say what my resolution is because I think we jinx it, all right?” the president said. “But I can tell you, we really have a good resolution and it’s a resolution for our country.”

First lady Melania Trump ushered in 2020 in style at the Trump family’s New Year’s Eve party on Dec. 31, held at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla.

For New Year’s festivities, the first lady glistened in a silk-georgette Givenchy gown, which featured gold sequins at the neck and bodice and a floor-sweeping hemline. From Givenchy’s fall ’19 collection, the gown is available to purchase at Matchesfashion.com, where it retails for $4,740.

Trump’s shoes were not visible underneath the floor-length gown. However, she has two favorite styles for formal appearances — both pointed-toe, stiletto-heeled pumps — which were likely candidates for New Year’s: the Manolo Blahnik BB and the Christian Louboutin So Kate. For more casual engagements, the former model has chosen Adidas Stan Smith sneakers, Zara snake-print loafers and Timberland workboots.

For clothing, the first lady’s favorite brands include Michael Kors, Valentino and Christian Dior.

The entire Trump family came out for the Mar-a-Lago New Year’s bash, including first daughters Tiffany and Ivanka as well as first sons Eric, Don Jr. and Barron.

Trump took to her Instagram account to wish followers the best for the year ahead, sharing a yellow and red graphic reading “2020.”

“Wishing everyone a happy, prosperous and peaceful New Year!,” she wrote on Jan. 1, garnering over 100,000 likes on the image.

Trump Confuses New Year’s Resolutions with Birthday Wishes, Says He Won’t Say His Out Loud
President Donald Trump may need a refresher on what New Year’s resolutions are.

At his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on Tuesday, the president said that he’s keeping his resolution secret because he doesn’t want to “jinx it,” seemingly confusion the annual tradition with birthday wishes.

“What’s your resolution?” a reporter asked Trump, 73, and First Lady Melania Trump, 49. After Mrs. Trump responded with “peace in the world,” the president stopped to interject.

“Peace is right, but I’m not sure you’re supposed to say a resolution out loud,” Trump said, waving his hand. “I don’t want to say what my resolution is because I think we jinx it, alright?”

President Trump’s expanded answer went on like a campaign promise.

“I can tell you, we really have a good resolution and it’s a resolution for our country,” he said. “We love our country. Our country has never done better than it’s doing right now.”

In December, Trump became the third president in American history to ever be impeached. The House of Representatives voted to impeach the president on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress last year.

A Senate trial is expected sometime early this year, but it’s also expected that President Trump will be quickly acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate, clearing him from the risk of removal.

No president has ever been removed from office over an impeachment. Both President Andrew Johnson and President Bill Clinton were acquitted of their impeachment charges.

“It is tragic that the president’s reckless actions make impeachment necessary,” House speaker Nancy Pelosi told her fellow congressmen before Trump was impeached. “He gave us no choice.”

The president has continued to claim his impeachment was “very unfair with no Due Process, proper representation, or witnesses” and has repeatedly called it a “witch hunt” and a “sham” investigation.

“Now Pelosi is demanding everything the Republicans weren’t allowed to have in the House,” Trump complained during a Twitter tantrum on Christmas Day, slamming Pelosi for holding off from delivering the articles of impeachment to the Senate. “Dems want to run majority Republican Senate. Hypocrites!”

Pelosi has explained her decision to hold up the impeachment trial by not delivering the articles yet

“The House cannot choose our impeachment managers until we know what sort of trial the Senate will conduct,” Pelosi wrote on Twitter in late December. “President Trump blocked his own witnesses and documents from the House, and from the American people, on phony complaints about the House process. What is his excuse now?”
